The Cake!
(Based from the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard)
Matthew 20:1-16
In the story… there is this Teacher who loves her students
dearly. And because of that she baked a cake for them (let’s make it simple,
we’ll show a cute picture of a chocolate cake). She put some grated chocolate
rolls on top and sprinkled with freshly picked cherries around. She wants to
share this cake to her beloved students.
That day (1ST BOY) came first to the class, he was so early to
prepare for the other subjects, and as the teacher saw this early boy inside
the room, she told him that she baked a cake for the whole class, with this,
she politely requested him to stay in a while and guard the cake from all the
insects that might ruin it. She advised him that after the teacher’s meeting, he
will get his part, so better to safeguard it dearly.
The teacher went out, and after
few minutes there was a cat came and ferociously running toward the cake! (1st
Boy) immediately took it up and shoo the cat. The cat was so fervent and would
like to mess it up yet with all his might he battled for it and carefully
returned it down on the table.
Then, suddenly (2nd
BOY) came in, he told (1st Boy) while he was walking to class, he was also asked
by their teacher to look after the cake, therefore the two sat beside each other
and somewhat enticed by the sweet aroma and mouth-watering look of the cake,
the two boys notion that the cake seemed temptingly posing in front of them!
It was almost half an hour, but the teacher
was still in the meeting, (1st Boy) looks sleepy that time so only (2nd
Boy) perceived a cockroach which silently creeping on the table and tried to
smack of the cake. (2nd Boy), instantly get one pair of his slippers
and killed the pest.
The two stayed in, an hour and a
half had passed yet the teacher did not show off. It is almost time, and other
students came in straight to their seats, (3rd Boy) observed his
two friends look impatiently staring at the cake. He joined the two and sit
silently while waiting for their teacher, (3rd Boy) noticed that
there were some mosquitoes buzzing around, so he opened the window to show the
way out of the room.
Exactly two hours later, the teacher
came in and was so excited to present the cake. The whole class had a joyful
chorus of acknowledgement for the teacher’s surprise. All of them feel so
blessed! The teacher tapped the three boys on the shoulder for their
cooperation, however (1st Boy) expect to get two slices for the
great effort? But the cake was just enough for each students and the teacher
only prepared one slice for each. (1st Boy) got his, and was badly disappointed
he truly anticipates receiving greater than what he deserve. Sadly, he accepted
the cake with a squirm on his face, slowly tasted it, and then seated frustratingly
with arms crossed.
Metaphorically, the
Kingdom of Heaven is like this, as the Great Land Owner has said, “The last will be the first and first will
be the last.”
For us to ponder;
1. In
what ways have we become proud of our achievements and effort in ministry,
expecting God to reward us probably beyond what we deserve?
2. Do
we think we have little to offer God, that we have minimal resources, or that
we have sacrificed everything for the Lord? He considers you and values your
sacrifice and efforts. Let’s continue trusting and hoping that He will reward
you generously.
So let’s personally enjoy & treasure our delectable sweet gift of Salvation, coated with an aroma of His grace and passionately baked in love. To our True Baker King!
To Him be the glory and honor forever!
